Azra is a legendary, utopian civilization rumored to be beyond the Badlands. Its existence is often questioned by those from the Badlands. It was destroyed by the Black Lotus under the command of Magnus.

History[]

According to Penrith, Azra is only a folktale passed on to Cog orphans, making them believe they were from a far away paradise. This suggests that within the Badlands Azra had largely been forgotten, although the existence of Dark Ones was not considered completely unbelievable, as evidenced by Quinn's reaction to meeting M.K. and witnessing his powers.

In "Black Lotus, White Rose," Sunny discovers that he himself is from Azra, the son of Azra's ruler. When Sunny's memory is restored, Azra is shown to be a haven amidst a destroyed city from the Old World whose inhabitants execute visitors to keep the secret of its existence.

Following Bajie using the Book of Azra and Azran compass in order to active the Azra Radio Tower. Pilgrim, one of the children raised in the new Azra that Dante tried to build, intercepts this signal and resurfaces after being in hiding for most of his life. He follows the signal until he uncovers the Meridian Chamber, the origin of the Gift. This enables him to create an army of Dark Ones, and he attempts to destroy all of the Badlands so that he can build a new Azra. This eventually culminates in a battle at the First Temple of Azra where Pilgrim is killed by Sunny, Bajie, and Kannin, although Sunny is killed in the process. This leaves Kannin as the last person still alive that once lived in Azra, and with no intention of bringing it back, the legendary city is gone for good.
